Monika's Masterpiece: At School
Artist Statement The goal of my work is to show others what kids use at school daily through photos and creative expression. School is a very important element of every young person’s life so that is why I chose that theme.. My vision with this collection of photos would be to show what kids use at school but not only supplies, but also clothes and technology. There are a variety of articles and school supplies presented in the images. For the most part, I tried to position the objects in creative patterns- whether it is the colourful markers or scissors arranged in square and diamond shapes. I took my photos from different angles and shot my objects either from a distance- like the Canadian flag in the wind or as a close up like the half lit globe that takes up most of one of the photos. All the photos that I collected have colour and and have a unifying theme of school and education.
When looking at my photography I want people to see what people see every day, but from a different perspective. . The reason I did this was because I wanted to bring more focus to daily life and daily used products. For this assignment I wanted to do something that everyone is familiar with. As every single person once went to school or is still attending one, those school related everyday objects will be familiar and people will be comfortable with my photos as they will know exactly what is in them.
I also tried to make the photos relevant to current events. That is why I could not omit the Covid 19 pandemic and this idea is expressed in the photo with the masks hanging on a metal pole. Everyone at school, and beyond, is required to wear a mask and this trend has been going around for 2 years. So I decided to add covid masks to the list. Also, by now, we all have our own cloth mask collection- just like my collection is shown in the picture.
The art of photography can teach young people a perspective of art in their life. I mean like if you put certain colors together to make things look nice, the pictures look more attractive. Some pictures have a more metaphorical meaning. For example, the picture of the globe half-lit and half dark could be symbolic of the contrasts between different parts of the world.
All in all, I learned that you can get creative with everyday things and still be able to present them in a new light and with added meaning - Monika
